And this is not a perfect post. I think the discrepancy actually says a whole lot more about our perceived gender roles, but it was something I had noticed and not seen articulated anywhere else.

Weighing in on the #boymom article. I agree that the use of the hashtag says something about our perceived gender roles, but I’d argue that it’s not at all the reason the author gives. As a mom of boys and no girls (and one who doesn’t use hashtags), I’ve always assumed the reason behind the hashtag is that moms with sons and no daughters spend much of our time answering those who want to know if were going to have another child “to finally get that girl” or assuring society that we aren’t disappointed about not having had a daughter. (I imagine that dads of daughters only have to do this well. However, no one seems to assume that my husband is disappointed about not having had a girl or wants another child solely to have a daughter.) To my mind, and based on mothers I know who use the hashtag, they’re doing so with the intent to make clear that they are happy to be the mom of boys, and not in any way disappointed by the sex of their children.

It’s interesting that you mention the set of the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (love that show!!) as I just sent my husband a link for a house of the same era I found on Zillow near my home town. It hasn’t been touched since it was built in 1951. It really could be used as a set for the show. It’s pretty Marvelous:

If you are nervous about the link, you can find on Zillow; location: Latrobe PA; price range: $425,000 (very low housing costs in this area).

The #boymom blog post is very interesting, but I agree with Lauren that the blogger overlooks some pretty obvious explanations that may be part of the popularity of that hashtag: firstly, that moms of boys may feel overwhelmed by their less-familiar energy/needs, and secondly, that moms of boys may feel that boys get a bad rap these days and need the positive pr. Another reason for the discrepancy may be that moms post about parenting more on social media than dads (not sure if this is true overall, but it’s what I’ve seen in MY network).

There’s still an important root question in the blog post, though: do parents in general (or moms in particular) feel more proud of their boys than their girls? That’s not a question you can answer by asking, either, because what parent would admit to it?

The icicles were so beautiful, I am glad someone captured that before it melted away, although I am glad it finally melted away. I was having trouble getting myself to leave my Michigan house! Egads it was cold last week.
