  • You have to admire the artful nature of this mess (because otherwise I’ll flip over having spent hours in this kid’s room the day before to pare down and organize). 🤷🏻‍♀️ I went to an event with @dyson hosted by @theeverygirl_ a on Thursday, and I got to take home the latest vacuum! Its so nice and I was all excited about coming up here to do the actual cleaning (vs. the tidying from yesterday), and it was like I stepped on to an obstacle course. 🤦🏻‍♀️ #dysoninchicago #thelovelyvictorian
  • Oaktoberfest (heh, Oak Park, you’re cute) is tonight and tomorrow! I got to hang out with these ladies in a spot I didn’t even know existed in town (I could see my house from up there 🙋🏻‍♀️) at a little pre-party with @downtownoakpark. The family and I will be heading over for music and food tonight. Say hi if you’re there too! #Oaktoberfest
  • Hi, hello! Here’s an introduction of sorts as I ponder what the next pivot in my business/life will be. Because maybe you haven’t been following along for years and are ever so slightly curious about this kind of thing? 👋 I’m Nicole. I live in Oak Park (just outside of Chicago) with my husband, our three kids, two dogs, a cat, and a couple of guinea pigs. I’ve been a handyman and a bookseller, and I used to do odd jobs like paint kids’ faces, paint murals in kids’ rooms, and do elaborate holiday window displays. I’ve also had three businesses and I’ve been self-employed since 2004. ▪️ Pink Loves Brown was my stationery shop from 2004-2013. I sold directly to customers via a site I created myself (before Etsy and the like existed there weren’t so many options for selling otherwise), and I sold wholesale to stores around the world. ▪️ Smart & Lovely was my graphic and web design studio around the same time. I’ve always done my own design and coding, but I used to take on about a dozen clients a year too. It was the side hustle while the stationery shop grew, and eventually I phased it out as I got too busy with everything else. ▪️ Making it Lovely began in 2007 as both a creative outlet and a way to promote the stationery shop. Blogging didn’t pay anybody’s bills back then, but of course over time I’ve been lucky enough to turn it into my dream job. It’s a job I still love, but where would the fun be if I stopped at just three businesses in my life? And only running one at a time? What is this, some kind of work/life balance? 🤦🏻‍♀️ I have questions. I have concerns! Mostly about my sanity and lack of additional time to pour into this, but also because it could be a public thing I attempt to do that doesn’t take off the way I want it to (I have lofty ambitions). But it also feels like something I need to do, so here we go.
  • I’ve been in research mode. How can I best streamline things on the admin side so I can work more efficiently with clients? I’m so thankful for the increased interest in design services, but it’s the business side of things that I’m getting into place. Do I use my own name? Separate LLC? How does one find their receiving warehouse? I don’t know what it’s all going to look like exactly, but I’m ready to find out. ❤️ #thelovelyvictorian
  • Logan Square, you are charming. 1️⃣ The converted church was a favorite on the house walk today. Based on what seems to be an excellent sense of both style and humor, we want to be friends with the owners. 2️⃣ Looks like any other house in the neighborhood from the outside. Inside SURPRISE IT’S STUNNING. 3️⃣ Converted into a single-family home with a dining room that seats 22 (OMG) at a SUPER long dining table. 4️⃣ Art Nouveau elements on the outside, Prairie/Craftsman details in the inside and a restoration based on the original blueprints found in the rafters. 🧡 And I shared a bit more in my Stories from the inside of house two!
  • Laundry room countertop thoughts: I don't want to do butcher block or laminate. Stock cabinets are too flimsy for the weight of stone. Why can't I buy a wooden countertop like the ones in my house from 100+ years ago? *realizes they MADE them 100+ years ago and I can too* Eureka. #thelovelyvictorian
